Commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024—A Chilling Reminder
The stark recall of the experience of mass torture and slaughter of a multitude of innocent citizens is a lesson of grave concern today.
What we commemorate today has always been a historical enigma when self-serving, misguided leadership has captured and controlled its people’s minds and actions. What becomes startlingly clear is that the tumultuous and repulsive history of the past has continued to exist as a less recognizable undercurrent, building into a potentially recurrent disaster in our time. The vulnerability for recurrence is always present as individuals or groups seem to lack respect or acceptance for our differences, along with the malicious intent of wanting to dominate and gain dictatorial powers.
The perpetrators of fear and division gain traction by stoking basic human fears of losing basics such as livelihood, economic security, and shelter and being overrun or replaced by others felt to be a threat. Ideologically extreme-positioned political parties achieve domination by espousing disinformation that foment hatred, fear, and division.
Today’s communications technological advances make it easier for entities seeking advantage, control, and dominance, allowing them to be destructive forces against the public welfare and collaboration that benefit all. It becomes easier for ill-intended people to take advantage of others for control and profit by manipulating the frailties of human nature with deception, rhetoric, and propaganda. The reality is that what occurred in the past can gain momentum and again lead to a process of degradation, warfare, death, and destruction of parts of the population, other nation-states, and the environment on which we all depend.
I recall a poignant personal story I wrote about my reunion with an aged cousin of my mother during a visit to Isreal, thought lost in the Nazi death camp. Her location was aided by a letter my mother gave me before her death.
